Inter district Report 26 July 2015

Life Members Cup by David Graham

The Kiama side travelled to Hornsby in the final match of Round 2 determined to reverse their first round loss of 5/3 to the Hornsby team last month at Jamberoo. No 1 pair David Graham and Ross Smith took a little while to adjust to the Hornsby courts and found themselves down 4 games to 2 in the opening match. Holding their serves and breaking twice the Kiama pair won 4 games in a row for a 6/4 victory. Bob Morgan and David Jones were just too strong as No2 pair winning 6/2.

All the Kiama players lifted their play and went to a strong 7 sets to zero lead completely demoralizing the home team with Bob and Dave losing the last set to the No 1 Hornsby pair. A strong 7 sets 44 games to 1/25 victory to Kiama.

George Rider Cup by David Lehman

Our team with new inclusion David du Bois travelled to Southern Districts where we encountered our strongest opposition to date. Starting well David du Bois and Mark Coleman had a 6/4 win followed by David Lehman and Frank Wallner beating the second couple 6/1 – the next four matches saw Kiama win 2 and lose 2 sets to be four sets to two up going into the final round where David Lehman and Frank Wallner lost a tough tie break 7/6 and David du Bois and Mark Coleman going down 6/4 making it a game count to determine the winners. The match was 4 sets all but in the game count Kiama came out victorious 39 games to 36 games to keep their unbeaten record intact.

George Fletcher Cup by Bill Summerside

KSDTA played Southern Districts at Leumeah. After leading 5-1 Michael Phipps and Ian Avery clinched the first set in a close 6-4 and this was followed up with a   6-2 win by Chris Ford and Bill Summerside. Mike and Bill extended the lead to 3 sets to nil with a hard fought 6-4 win. Ian Avery and Chris Ford lost a close 6-4 and Mike and Chris lost 7-5 in another tight set where things just didn’t go the way of the visitors. Ian and Bill steadied the ship with a 6-3 win which was followed up by a solid 6-1 win to Chris and Bill which ensured a win for the Kiama team. Mike Phipps and Ian Avery narrowly lost the last set 7-5 but the overall score was Kiama/Shellharbour 5 sets 44 games to Southern Districts 3 sets 34 games keeping the team at the top of the table in the George Fletcher Cup. The Kiama team plays its next match against Nepean on August 9th.

Blackwell Cup by Joe Moseley

The Blackwell Cup side of Joe Moseley, Bjorn Myers and Brenden Smith played a home game against Illawarra 2. Joe Moseley and Bjorn Meyers both had tough 3 set wins in their singles matches and Brenden Smith going down in his singles to leave the match all square at 4 sets each after the singles. Unfortunately the Illawarra side were very experienced doubles players and got the better of the local side winning all 3 doubles sets and the match 7 sets to 4 sets and 60 games to 45 games

Life Members Cup – by David Graham

Ross Smith returned to Inter district after a two week layoff in rare form absolutely blitzing the opposition from NSW Chinese. Ross served and volleyed and made his way to the net at every opportunity with solid volleys and huge overheads silencing the visitors. Mark and David Graham struggled in the first set finally winning 7 to 3 in a Tie break set. Ross won his first set with Bob Morgan 6/1 and followed this up with another 6/1 win partnered by David. Down 5 games to 2 with Mark Graham, Ross turned up the intensity and came back to win 7/5. The NSW Chinese team went home licking their wounds after an 8 sets 50 games to 0 sets 22 games defeat. Bob Morgan was a solid support with his flat and deep return of serve from the backhand. The team travel to Hornsby next week and hope to consolidate on today’s win.

George Fletcher Cup – by Bill Summerside

The George Fletcher Cup team played at McDonald Park against Blacktown this weekend 19/7. Michael Phipps and Cameron Pearson began proceedings with a strong 6/2 win and this was backed up by Peter Izzard and Todd Austin taking the second set 6/3. Cameron and Peter consolidated with another 6/3 set whilst Cameron and Todd were also victorious with a 6/3 win. A slight lapse saw Mike and Todd drop the 5th set 6/3 but Cameron and Peter rallied to take the next set 6/2. The Kiama team dominated the last 2 sets winning 6/1, 6/1 giving Kiama-Shellharbour the match 7 sets 45 games to Blacktown’s 1 set 21 games. The team goes on the road again for the next 3 weeks beginning with Southern Districts on the 26th July.

 George Rider

The George Rider team this week of Jeff Brown, Richard Welsh, Owen Rice and Frank Wallner played Blacktown 1 at Kiama and had a good win 6 sets to 2.

Life Members Cup

A strong Hornsby- Killara team travelled to Jamberoo to take on the local side lead by Bob Morgan.Mark Graham and Wilco DelHaas, a new combination were overwhelmed by their more experienced opponents who served and volleyed and came into the net at every opportunity losing 6/2. Captain Bob with David Jones regained the equilibrium with a solid 6/1 victory against the second pair to level the match.

With the match tilted in Hornsby favour and down 4 sets to 2, Mark Graham and Wilco Delhaas redeemed themselves winning 6/1 against the pair they lost to in the first set. The match came down to the final set with Bob and David needing to win the set and snatch a victory. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and Kiama lost the match 5 sets 36 to 3 sets 28 games to an experienced team exhibiting outstanding doubles skills around the net and overhead.

George Fletcher Cup Victory

Round Three of the George Fletcher Cup and Kiama were up against Southern Districts at McDonald Park. The first two sets were closely fought but both sets went to Southern Districts 6/4. Peter Izzard and Todd Austin played well to win the 3rd set 6/1 while Bill Summerside and Cameron Pearson held on to win 7/5 squaring up the match. The 5th set was won by Cameron and Peter 6/3 but in a close encounter Todd and Bill lost 7/5. The match was again evenly poised at 3 sets all but the locals had a slender games advantage.

Todd and Cameron lost the 7th set meaning Bill and Peter had to win the last set for a win. The match seesawed backwards and forwards with neither team being able to forge ahead. Eventually it came down to a tiebreaker which was also going point for point until 3 all before Peter and Bill were able to take the advantage of a couple of unforced errors from the Southern Districts pair, going on to take the tiebreaker 7/3 and the set 7/6 and the match 4 sets 42 games to 4 sets 40 games. A close match indeed.

George Rider Cup

Travelled to NSW Chinese our team made up of Paul Summerside, Richard Welsh, Mark Coleman and David Lehman

Paul and Richard opened with a 6/4 win against the Chinese first couple with David and Mark beating the second couple 6/2 – in the second round Paul and Mark won a good match 6/2 and David and Richard having a comfortable 6/0 – there after Kiama Shellharbour exerted full authority over the match in the third round with Paul and David winning another 6/0 and Richard and Mark having a 6/3 win, where Mark strained a hamstring and in the final round Paul and Richard winning 6/1 and David and Mark 6/2 – an easy win 8 sets 48 games to 0 sets 14 games – hoping Mark is sound for next week as we move into the last match of the first round – the Chinese were very generous hosts with an abundance of eats and drinks for which we thank them.

George Fletcher Inter District From BILL SUMMERSIDE

Kiama/Shellharbour team travelled to Blacktown on Sunday 28 June. They have been our nemesis for the last few years defeating us in both finals in which we have played them. Chris Ford and Ian Avery got us off to a good start with a 6/3 win. This was followed up by Grant King and Bill Summerside taking out the 2nd set in a tiebreaker after coming back from 5/2 down. Ian and Grant continued to perform well with a 6/3 win in the 3rd set before Chris and Bill consolidated the result with a 6/0 win giving us a 4 sets to 0 lead. A minor hiccup saw Ian and Bill drop the 5th set 6/3 before Grant and Chris sealed the match with another tiebreaker win in set 6. Grant and Bill put the visitors further ahead with a 6/3 win and Ian and Chris rounded out the match with yet another tiebreaker set win, showing how well the team performed under pressure. The final result was Kiama/Shellharbour winning 7 sets 48 games to Blacktown’ s 1 set 33 games. Well done Grant and Chris on winning 4 sets each and ably backed up by Ian and Bill.

Picton Seniors by DAVID GRAHAM

A seniors tournament was held in Picton in early June and was well supported by Kiama players.

Jeff Brown and Jason Clarke (Dapto) teamed up to win the 35 Mens Doubles with a solid win over Todd de Leeuw and David King from Fairy Meadow. Jeff and Jason are working their way into Seniors tennis are a force to be reckoned with.

Jan Horspool played in the 50 singles performing well and enjoying the experience. Seasoned stalwart Alan Cocks and Dianne Etchells teamed up in the 110 Combined Mixed Doubles and found the going “tough’ against some solid doubles combinations in the 130 Combined. Stuart Dawson and Caroline Turner winning this event. Stuart is a new member of the Kiama LIfe Members Cup Inter-district team.

Rob Massey and Charlie Sugar performed well with a narrow 6/5 win over Colin Elliot and Ron Lewis but it wasn’t enough and were just out of prize winning contention.
