LIFE MEMBERS CUP 28 JUNE 2015 – by DAVID GRAHAM

The second round of the NSW Hardcourt Tennis Association Life Members Cup Inter-district match was held at Eastwood Thornleigh Tennis Centre with Kiama taking on the 2014 Champions New South Wales Chinese. The Kiama side without star player Bob Morgan was keen to avenge their loss in the final last year and took an early lead with Mark and David Graham winning 6/2. On the next court Ross Smith and Stuart Dawson were struggling at 5/0 down. Both Kiama players started to find their range and bounced back to 5 all and then 6 all. In the Tie Break both pairs had their chances and with Ross and Stuart with 4 set points it was looking promising but unfortunately it slipped away losing 15-13.

The match was evenly poised at three sets all. Mark Graham played beyond himself, supported by David, taking the vital 7th set 6/3 and the lead in the match 4 sets to three. Ross Smith served and volleyed well with Stuart Dawson returning serve well defeated the No1 pair 6/3 and closed out the match 5 set to 3. Best players were Mark Graham and Ross Smith, well supported by Stuart Dawson who regrouped well after cutting his arm on the wire fencing retrieving a wide ball to take the important last and winning set.

Life members Cup Report – presented by David Jones

The competition commenced with Mark Graham(1)and Ross Smith(2) v A. Rowley(1) and W. Stanton(2). Kiama got off to a flyer, leading 4-0 before the Southern Team moved up a gear taking the set 6-4. There was some electrifying rallying during this match with Ross producing some terrific drives and power volleys and Mark in wonderful touch and producing change of pace, McEnroeish touches at the net and wonderful consistency and power when serving.

Bob(3) and DJ(4) stepped up for Set 2 realizing there was to be no easy meal today. Bob showing why he has enjoyed so much success on the Senior’s circuit and providing his wonderful coverage of the court, producing power, placement and amazing consistency and every now and then DJ, coming out of a mist of admiration for The Master, provided his three penny bit…my turn??? The match was tight and enjoyable and certainly did not reflect the closeness of the match…Kiama 6-2.

In Set 3 Bob and Mark produced some terrific play against the gun No.1 Mark and supported superbly by No. 3 Steve. Down 5-1, Bob and Mark produced some of the best tennis of the day and battled long and hard with some incredible rallies covering the length and breadth of the court. Alas, the score ended with a 6-3 win for the locals. Great match!

Set 4 Ross with his 40# pressure in his strings and DJ battled hard against Big Abe and Colin and probably did not produce the silky performance required. Colin Abely? provided a lively supporting role to the No.2 and in the end Southern prevailed 6-3. In Set 5, Mark and DJ played slamming No. 1 Wayne and No. 4 Colin…Mark and DJ were trailing 4-1 when David said to Mark “It’s time”. David began playing like a man ‘possessed’ diving for ball after ball. Mark’s job was to pick David up off the ground after each dive. DJ Served at 5-5 and demoralized the opposition. It was all over…7-5 to Mark and David Jones.

Set 6 was an amazing match with the perspiration and spitting rain pouring off all 4 Players…A wonderful battle across the net! At times we thought one or all of the foursome would leap over the net and do what one does inside the ring to enhance the great fight for supremacy, however, etiquette prevailed and the 78 ft by 45 ft contest was finally won by Southern in a gripping tie breaker 7-6.

At this stage the locals were leading by 4 sets to 2 and 32 games to 29. However, going into the final 2 sets We knew there was still the a mighty hope of turning this wonderful contest around and following our fitness coach’s advise of “more tea and cake”… We set off on our quest for glory…

With the lights coming on and possibility of rain, the decision, against local concern, was to play on 2 courts for our final 2 matches.

Set 7 saw Mark and Ross playing Steve and Colin. What a match! And the tide was turning towards a possible turn around in our tea leaves…Visitors by 6 to 3.

Now both Teams were locked at 35 games apiece and 4-3 in matches to the locals…What a Finish! Mark and Ross and their counterparts rushed next door to gain a vantage to the Grand Finale…Bob and DJ v’s Wayne and Abe…

Against all odds Bob and Dave after an early lead found themselves level at 4-4…who is going to reign supreme? The audience, munching on left over sandwiches and downing more nervous cups of tea saw the boys from Southern win the day 6-4…Ahhhh!

If only…that tie breaker, one less game, one more game and so on and so on…

Southern Districts 5 sets to 3 and 41 games to 39.

Congratulations to Southern’s Wayne, Abe, Steve and Colin and well done to our courageous foursome of Mark, Ross, Bob and Dave. We are all looking forward to Next Time!

Thanks also to Southerners for their Après party at the Club…Great Day had by All.

Interdistrict Report Weekend 21 June 2015 – By DAVID GRAHAM

The George Rider Cup team performed well in their second round home match against Southern Districts. Owen Rice and Jeff Brown got the match off to a positive start with a close fought tie break to win the encounter 7/6. Frank Wallner and David Lehman the second pair exerted their superiority to win 6/2 and set up a fine win 7 sets 47 to 1 set 27 games and find themselves at the top of the ladder after two weeks. Jeff Brown led from the front as Number one player not losing a set.

He is in great form after winning the 35 doubles at the recent Picton Seniors tournament. Frank Wallner well supported the team without losing a set also. Owen Rice played his consistent best in a match where the home side had to work hard for the victory

The George Fletcher team was down on regular players for their first match of the 2015 season but played well to surprise their opponents from Nepean with steady and solid doubles play. Brett Thomas and Ian Avery fought back from being well down in the opening match to then level 6 all, but narrowly losing in the tie break 7/6. This inspired Grant King and David Graham to work well together to win 6/0. Even though the Kiama pairs were inexperienced and untried together they proved much too solid for their opponents running away with the next 6 sets to win the match 7 sets/48 games to 1 set/23 games.

Ian Avery was the player of the match with his offensive double handed backhand return of serve creating opportunities to then move into the net and dominate play. Ian was well supported by Grant King lifting the bar with his giant killing forehand drives. Brett Thomas regrouped from a couple of lapses to dominate the net and show his doubles expertise.

Life Members Cup

The team travelled to Southern Districts and after getting off to a flyer in the first set, leading 4-0 Mark Graham and Ross Smith couldn’t hold on as the Home Team moved up a gear to take the set 6/4. Kiama with David Jones and Bob Morgan responded accordingly with Bob producing power, placement and amazing consistency to take the set 6/2. Kiama at the half way point however found themselves down 3 sets to 1. In the fifth set Mark Graham and DJ played some great tennis.

David played “tough” and held serve at 5-5 all and then the Kiama combination broke serve to win 7/5. In the last set it was anyone’s game and David Jones and Bob Morgan needed to win the set, the pair found themselves at 4-4. Some exciting tennis by the home team ensured a win 6/4 and victory by the narrowest of margins. Southern Districts 5 sets /41 games to Kiama 3 sets /39 games. Player of the match was David “Wild Man” Jones who dived for ball after ball playing like a man “possessed”.
