Club Champs 2016

The 2016 Club Championships semi finals and finals were played on 2nd and 3rd July under perfect weather conditions. The players all enjoyed both days and the format of a round robin followed by semis and finals seems a good format to provide all with a good amount of tennis.

Mens singles A was won by Bjorn Myers beating Joe Moseley in a very close and hard fought battle with Bjorn eventually winning 7-5 in the third set.

Mens singles B was an equally hard fought encounter with Wilco Delhaas getting the better of Kevin Jones 6-3 in the third set

The mens doubles was won by Joe Moseley and David Lehman again in a three set struggle over Mark Booth and Dane Mottley

Our mixed doubles champions were Joe and Chelsea Moseley beating Kevin Jones and Belinda Murphy in an entertaining match

The ladies and senior events are still being run and will be concluded by September

Thanks to all the competitors and supporters

Life members Cup-Round 2 Report from David Graham

The Life Members Cup Team travelled to Hornsby-Killara Tennis Centre on Sunday 3rd July with Garry Gleissner pulling out mid-week with an injury.

The injured David Graham filled in and played down the order.

Steven Thurstan returned to Inter District and paired with Bob Morgan winning the first set 6/3. David Jones and David Graham came back from a  slow start  to take a tough set 7/5  The home team took the next two sets including a tight  7/6 win over Stephen Thurstan and David Graham. The old combination of Morgan and Graham steadied the ship 6/3 and with two sets to play the match was evenly poised. No 1 pair Thurstan and Morgan won 6/3 but in a solid match against the top Hornsby pair David and David salvaged three games (6/3 loss) with David Jones rallying well and putting a lot of pressure on the Hornsby combination.

At the end of the day a narrow win to Kiama 4 sets 42 games to Hornsby’s 4 sets 38 games. Stephen Thurstan played well in his comeback to competition tennis from 2012 showing signs of greatness. Improvement will continue over the next months with more match play. Bob Morgan sustained an injury to his hip flexor early in the match but battled on to win three of his four sets.

All-round this was a solid effort from the Kiama side.

From David Graham

Inter District 26th June

After last week’s Inter District washout the Life Members Cup team travelled to Southern District to take on the 2015 Champions on their home court in the first match of the season. Bob Morgan and David Graham lost a close match 6/3 after not being able to hold serve. New comers Garry Geissler and Allan Cox the second pair combined well levelling the match at a set each. A see- sawing match followed with the visitors down 4/2 after six sets. Allan and Garry lost 6/1 to the Southern Districts top pair 6/1 and Bob and David secured a 6/0 against the opposition’s second pair.

A loss to the Kiama team 5 sets to three.

The best player on the day was Allan Cox rallying well and returning serve consistently.

Garry Geissler served well and used his height to advantage around the net.

An all-round solid performance with Bob Morgan on the comeback trail after shoulder surgery in 2015 showing signs of greatness.
