Kiama Players Return from Yarrawonga. by David Graham

Cathy Benson a member of the Kiama Tennis Club ladies midweek Division 1 team with Kate Sharpe, Merrilyn Glaister, Tracey Ellem and Vicki Pritchard   performed well in the 50 Ladies singles at the Victorian Grass Court championships last week in Yarrawonga. Cathy in a tough Round Robin pool lost only one match to the eventual winner  Jill Meggs from Melbourne 6/7 6/1 6/3 in a very close match.  The Kiama Midweek team resting this comp was victorious in the competition earlier this year.

Bob Morgan after overcoming a slow start on the grass surface played with Bill Sale from Melbourne to be runners up in the 70 Men’s Doubles losing a solid match to John Rheinberger (Merimbula) and Robert Hughes (Melbourne) 6/0 6/4 in what was the final. Teaming up with David Graham, Bob Morgan gave away 13 years to reach the 60 Men’s Doubles semifinals and in  what was a very tight match the local Kiama pair were unlucky to lose 7/6 6/3.  Bob is moving up the rankings list and is now ranked 248 in the world in singles and 261 in doubles.  These are great results for our senior members.

Bob Morgan performs well at Kooyong by David Graham

Playing in the Victorian Seniors Clay Championships at Kooyong (29/10-1/11) Bob Morgan playing on his least favoured surface faced a set down 6/4 and a break down at 5/3 in the second set before he staged a brilliant comeback to take the second set 7/5 and then held serve and got on top of his more fancied Melbourne opponent to take the third set 6/2 to win his quarter final match.

In the 70 doubles (drawing a local partner) Bob worked hard to hold up his partner covering all the lobs and short cross court returns to win 6/2 6/0 in their first match. After a three hour singles and doubles Bob paired with David Graham both finding the going tough to lose their first round 60 Men’s doubles match. David had earlier in the day won a three and a half hour marathon in the 60 men’s singles winning 6/3 3/6 6/2.

In the semifinal of the 70 men’s singles Bob lost to the No 1 seed Wayne Hassett 6/1 6/2. For his efforts Bob now has a World ranking of 566 and Australian ranking of 33 in the 70 men’s singles. Well done Bob
